Volvo L90D hard starting

hi guys i have a 2000 L90d that only wants to start when it is ice cold. but even then it takes about 8 seconds of cranking until u feel a "bump" in the throttle pedal.
once warn the machine will not start at all with out ether. if you crank with no ether then it will just crank forever, no smoke what so ever out of the pipe. I'm talking only a tiny blast and she goes right off. but once again you get that little bump in the throttle.
the machine has been doing this for actually about 5 years and i just can't take it any. we use it all day and never shut it off for 15 years straight now and we had never had a single problem besides this hard warm start problem. any ideas what can be going on. i always fix and maintain my own equipment but i went to the dealer for this one finally and the dealer is useless so far.
my gut feeling is the motor is getting no fuel because there is no smoke. i also feel like it has to be fuel pump related because i feel the bump in the throttle. its also most like the governor is holding back the rack and the ether spins the motor just fast enough to knock the rack open.

let me know what you guys think.
thanks in advance

Just acquired the unit as a yard dog. Runs great, decent tires, but no brakes and the steering sector is leaking. I need to know of any sources for new parts, wheel cylinders and wheel seal etc. And possibly a used steering sector. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cat 980B broken bell housing bolts

Bought this loader about 14 years ago with no 4th gear. About 10 years ago noticed bell housing bolts were loose and some missing/broken. Fixed them and all was ok . Didn't pay attention to them over the years. Now all but two or three on top are broken. And this time it's separated about 1/4" on the bottom. What would cause this?

I'm hoping T.C., Bob Ont, Kshansen and the other Cat experts chime in!!

We're going to pull the engine to fix the bolts but whats the cause?? We have 2 more 980B's without this issue.

Getting ahead of rim leaks, bead leaks, bad seating area

Well, after a decade of likely running solid filled tires, the rims are in a bit of rough shape. JD 644E

So, there is some pitting on the rim flange area, pits maybe a 16th to an 8th deep. Trying to guess where everything seats is a little tricky, there is a 3 piece rim, so the o-ring groove is pretty pristine as is the inside of the rim piece. The flange rings fit nicely on the rim, good solid looking, replaced one lock ring that was damaged. It looks like there is a 1 inch smooth area between the flange and the ribs inside the rim. It seems this should be tapered like the inside slope of the rim, maybe a 2-3 degree angle and there is a smooth part of the tire with a small bulge right next to the support ring. My plan is simply to primer the rims, bondo up the imperfections, primer and paint over the bondo to have a nice smooth surface in order to give the tire a chance to seal. I'm not quite sure if the area should be 0 degrees but it looks like it should have a bit of taper to make a nice wedge seal.

Anyone have any great tips for making sure rims seal and stay sealed.

CAT IT28F coupler switch

We just got a cat IT 28F in from Ritchie Brothers today. It's going to be a snow only machine but I wanted to play with it a little bit today- who doesn't love new iron?

Machine came with forks, will couple it up to a metal pless live edge pusher. The forks/coupler came unlatched but I can't find how to connect it. Sat in the machine for probably 25 mins this evening and I couldn't see it. We've leased many volvos over the years for snow and know there is the safety rocker switch on the dash area. Didn't see such a thing my IT28F. Can someone steer me to it? TIA

Salt Prep

So, my dept just built a new salt barn to store our bulk salt in for the winter. The plan is not to load the plow trucks out of this barn but to feed the smaller satellite barns with the big 800 tonner. We all know how that will work out. My question is, is there anything I can to to my ctl, wheel loader, and skid steer, (mostly the wheel loader) before the salt comes around? Looking to keep the equipment from rusting in two within a couple winters. We don''t have a wash pit at my shop but we do at the public works shops across town. Any type of treatment or coating I can spray on to keep the salt off and out?

Bobcat 743 Leaking Head Gasket

Hi,
I have a 743 with a kubota deisel that has a loss of power. I also noticed there is a small amount of bubbling & what appears to be exhaust in the antifreeze well. I'm guessing my head gasket is gone so my question is is there an easy fix? I don't want to have to pull the motor if I don't have to... I don't have the place to do it, nor do I want to invest another thousand dollars in this old machine. Please Help!

tire install fail!

Well, in theory everything should work but it don't :) Rims all painted, all the rusty areas sandblasted, primed, epoxy filled, primed and painted, gallon of Murphy's paste lube concentrate, put about a quart total on the tire beads, all the rim seating and slipping areas, new onion ring, new but wrong fu%^*ng valve stem, JD parts shows the small kubota sized stem, not the monster loader size. The paper parts book has the part number for the big bore valve stem.

So glop everything up, use the forks to coax the tire onto the rim, slide on all the other parts, o-ring and lock ring, *got the lock rings sandblasted and painted too* put everything on and hit it with the compressor. The tire starts to shift on the beads and then the air leakage equals the air input and end of show. I'd figure one of those cig lighter plug in compressors should do the job, it shows a tractor on the box.

Actually its a little 2hp shop compressor with a 20 gal tank, not anywheres near enough to do the job. I'll have the road service guys come out replace the valve stems and mount the other two tires. Have the clip on chuck for big and small bore, 10' hose gauge and valve, just not enough wind in the sails to get over the hump.

A question on the o-ring, its a fair bit smaller than the groove, I'm thinking its supposed to get jacked in place by the pressure, it only sits maybe 1/32 above the diameter of the rim. Again, that's the part number JD called for. A fatter ring would make sealing a bit better but maybe its's correct.

Video report from a Liebherr dealer event in Las Vegas, September 2016.
They talk about the US market and the Liebherr xpower wheel loaders and the new dozer PR 716 which was introduced to the US market.
What do you think about the Liebherr machines?

Hydraulic pump strangeness JD 644E

So this is nifty, the best explanation of how the brake/pilot parts of the pump work have come from the patent that JD filed, that makes more sense, its a closed circuit system, So the issue seems to be super low pressure. Now the brake pump that's installed looks nothing like any of the new/used ones on the market (matches the parts book) this one is a little strange. I'm going to go and get a data tag photo and see just what's going on. Whereas it was pissing brake fluid into the front axle and the rear axle brakes were wasted, I'm starting to wonder if they turned the pressure down so its just enough to run the pilot functions. More exploring and fun.

JD 444C Transmission whine and slow response

$

I have a 444C wheel loader that is having transmission issues. It feels somewhat slow accelerating, and when you get to even a small hill it slows way down, almost doesn't move on a steep hill with engine wide open. While it's doing this the transmission whines, sort of like a cross between a whine and a whistle, it gets higher as you accelerate. It still operates somewhat normally on the flat, I use it daily. I've put new transmission fluid in, JD Low Viscosity, which is what it's rated for. It does have a trans fluid leak, but I make sure to keep it topped up. I've replaced the two filters behind the steps to the cab, are there any other filters affecting the trans fluid? Also, the trans fluid pressure goes into the red slightly when you accelerate, then drops down when you let off. Any ideas?

Volvo bm L30 not changing gear

Hi i have just bought a 1987 volvo l30 with a known fault which is it is in probably 3rd gear and doesnt change gear at all only forward neutral and reverse The button on end of stalk for cutting the drive also does not work. The machine is meant to have automatic powershift not sure if this has been done away with but there is no red light coming on, on the aps box where the fuses and relays are. I dont hear any relay clicks when i twist the gear shift.
My batteries have been replaced and altenator checked and is working and putting out around 26.5v
I put the volt meter to the stip connector that is on the end of the stalk wires which plug into something beside the aps box. And i only am getting power at 10 and 25 and even when i twist the shifter it does not change volts to any other wire
I am feeling it may be my stalk faulty.
Any one any other ideas.
TIA

Proper Tire Inflation for working compost on dirt pad

$

Hi all, I have a 2 acre compost site that is on a dirt surface. The surface holds up pretty well, its not clayey, but the ground can be moist under the piles and in the winter. I have a 99' Cat 928G with its original 2.75yd bucket. We are usually picking up and dumping material, so about the same amount of forward as reverse. Alot of tight turns too because my site is small.
My tires are Michelin, when I spoke with the Cat dealer's tech line they said to inflate front to 30 and rear to 25. The tread on the tires are probably 30% left. Because we do food scrap compost, the ground can sometimes have objects such as knives, forks, and wine bottles. I have 3 questions...

What would be good inflation numbers given my working surface and the potential for hazards?

What would be a safe way to inflate the tires given that there could be a slice or weak point that i don't see before inflating?

If I do find a slice, what kind of repair can be done to preserve the tire.

Thank you!
